0605-0048HENRY CLAY HANDWRITTEN LETTER in ink, dated April, 1831, as a legal opinion in response to a letter dated Mar. 31, 1831 regarding the case of the U.S. vs. General Zachary Taylor, signed by U.S. Senator John J. Crittenden & others. The opinion condenses to "That Government can recover nothing from Gen. Taylor but in truth is justly in his debt, and that the suit should not be further prosecuted." Beneath the brief opinion are nine lines in Clay's handwriting, his opinion of the case, summarized as follows: "I think under all the circumstances of the controversy General Taylor ought not to be subject to the payment of the demand set up by the Government."
