1105-0069CIVIL WAR LETTER. Hand written with pen and ink by the Provost Marshall General of the United States, James Barnett Fry, born 1827, made provost Marshall of the U.S. in March, 1863, and given the rank of brigadier general in 1864. The letter is written to a Major Dodge, and quotes the president (Abraham Lincoln) and relates to the Pennsylvania State Guard, dated Nov. 29,1864 retaining soldier positions in the home guard rather than being inducted into the regular army. 7 1/2 in. by 9 1/2 in. on War Department letter head, in a Victorian walnut frame.
