The Breakers
The Vanderbilt Family’s Mansion known as “The Breakers” Newport, Rhode Island

As part of our September 20-22, 2010 auction offering, we are proud to be highlighting Silver Hollowware & Flatware from The Mary Soons McCarty Collection. Some of the pieces from Mrs. McCarty’s collection originally belonged to Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt (1880-1925) and his first wife Cathleen Gebhard Neilson, while they were living in the renowned Newport, Rhode Island mansion known as “The Breakers”. Reginald Vanderbilt was the grandson of the famous railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877). Mary Soons McCarty’s father, Sydney Grover Cleveland Soons, acquired the silver from the Vanderbilt estate in the 1920s while he was in the Vanderbilt Family’s service as an attorney.
