Description:

FERDINAND (JOACHIM) RICHARDT OIL ON CANVAS (Dutch/American, 1819-1895) Missouri River landscape with figures on the shore and in a rowboat waving to the Minnehaha side-wheeler steamer ferry. Image measures 17.25" x 27", signed "Ferd. Richardt" lower right and dated 1859. In a gilt wood and gesso frame. The Minnehaha was launched in Virginia in 1857 and was destroyed in a fire in New Orleans in 1865.

  • Provenance: passed down within the family from the consignor's grandmother Mary Wellman who married Bela Wellman's grandson, Kingsley Wellman. Bela Wellman (1819-1887), formed a cotton textile firm in Maryland in 1842 and was a cotton wholesaler in New Orleans. During the California gold rush Bela moved to San Francisco and formed the Wellman, Peck and Company, an importing and wholesale business and became one of California's largest manufacturing wholesale grocers.   • 702: The painting is in very good condition with few very small spots of inpainting, the canvas has not been re-lined. It appears to have been very lightly cleaned (there is some yellowing, possibly from tobacco residue, to the upper corner).
