LYLE TYPE LINE THROWING CANNON, Sculler Safety Corp., New York, serial #3128, with h 2-1/2" bore, 28" long black steel barrel with brass band, brass manufacturer's emblem and black cast iron carriage with two iron wheels. West Point graduate David A. Lyle (1845-1937) was the inventor of this type of gun. These guns were used primarily for shore-based rescue operations. The cannon would fire a line to the distressed party and allow for the person to pull themselves back to safety.
