Description:

REMBRANDT VAN RIJN ETCHING (Dutch, 1606-1669) "Self Portrait with Curly Hair and White Collar" (Bartsch 1; Biorklund 30-11; Hollstein 10). Circa 1630, second and final state of this rare etching, a good, strong impression on laid paper. The paper measures 2-1/4 inches by 1-15/16 inches (57.1mm by 49.6mm). Plate signed RHL center left. Matted and set in a wood frame. Provenance: From the collection of music composer Enrico Scognamillo (Italian/New York, 1866-1921) and passed down within the family. Scognamillo was friends with and worked for the Italian opera singer and art collector Enrico Caruso. They were known to exchange gifts and Scognamillo gave Caruso a collection of etchings from 1650 and Caruso drew a caricature of Scognamillo in 1913. This lot includes a letter from the consignor stating that it was owned by Enrico Scognamillo and passed down within the family.

    Condition:
  • 719: The etching is on laid paper that has a cream/yellow tone with some soiling particularly around the edges and to the back. There is a repair to the paper near the upper left corner and a tear to the lower right corner. There is a thin area to the back of the paper in the upper left corner, possibly from the removal of tape. There is a faint crease running horizontally across the paper. The back has some hinge tape and a few unidentified markings including a fountain pen marking in brown ink, "No 2" followed by a stylized M. The writing on the back that begins with B is: "Bartsch No1." Bartsch 1 is the image number from the Bartsch catalog raisonne. The etching was passed down within the Enrico Scognamillo family and is from the same estate that consigned Lot 724 in the January 2011 Auction, the Saverio Xavier Della Gatta painting (Italian, 1777-1829).
